Thousands sign parking petition

A GROUP of island residents lobbying Redland City Council over the introduction of paid parking at the Weinam Creek ferry terminal has pulled down its protest tent outside council chambers.

The group, Our Parking Spot, opened its “tent embassy” outside the offices on Wednesday, May 4, and planned to stay there until June 4.

The group, however, decided to pull up stumps on Friday last week after gathering 6142 signatures for a petition opposing paid parking at Weinam Creek. It also opposed council’s plans for the ferry terminal car park and removing reserved parking.

The decision to shut down the street-side protest came three days after Mayor Melva Hobson told the May full council meeting the Weinam Creek car park was the only place in the city where parking would not be free.
