On 17 July 1799 Lt Matthew Flinders sailed the sloop Norfolk into Moreton Bay. He touched down at Pumicestone Passage, Redcliffe and Coochiedmudlo Island.
This historical event is commemorated and celebrated on Coochiemudlo Island each year. This year it will be held on Sunday, 17th July.
The day will be packed with activities for the whole family. Whatever he’s doing and wherever he may be, Lt Flinders always takes time out to join us on the day and re-enact his arrival on what is now Norfolk Beach all those 212 years ago.
In addition, there will be a parade with local people in period costumes. The well-known Coochie Markets will be on again for the occasion, complete with games and contests for kids. Food and drinks will be available. A canoe race will be held shortly after Flinders’ re-enactment of his landing.
And MoretonBayIslands.com (that’s us) will also be there to record the events of the day. If you feel like sharing your thoughts, photos and experiences for the day, drop by our stall and post them on MoretonBayIslands.com.
